Weaning a Baby
Follow me as I try to wean my 15 month old baby.
I want to have it on record as to how long this process will take me. :)
Wish me luck!
Before this journey starts, let me brief you for a second:
- I read lots of books/internet sites about weaning a baby from breastfeeding.
- I exclusively have been breastfeeding all throughout and LO has just
started eating more solids recently (because when he turned 6 months and I gave him solids, he
ate just a bit)
- Up until now, he preferred mom's breastmilk over anything.
- I breastfeed LO to sleep
- I am going to stop the day feeds before the night feeds because those are the hardest and the night feeds are what I do to help LO go back to sleep.
March 2, 2010
Day 1:
I put calamansi on me to deter LO's appetite to breastfeed:
- this did not work because LO adjusted to the taste and continued to breastfeed (thus I doubt this will work next time).
Day 2: March 3, 2010
I tried putting garlic this time:
- LO laughed when he tried to breastfeed, and then turned away (maybe coz it smells! haha!)
Day 3: March 4, 2010
- I continued with the garlic and LO complains when he tastes it and turns away and reluctanlty drinks his milk from the cup. Did not breastfeed during the day today. Yay.
Day 4: March 5, 2010
- So far, with the garlic, LO has not breastfed during the day.
Day 5: March 6, 2010
- Still good with no breastfeeding during the day
Day 6: March 7, 2010
- I got nervous coz we were driving home (a 2 1/2 car trip) because I usually breastfeed LO to sleep in the car. But fortunately, I was able to force myself not to give in even while LO kept crying or complaining for a good 15 to 20 minutes, surprisingly, he just went to sleep!
Day 7 & 8 : March 8,9, 2010
- I think I can safely say that I have successfully weaned LO from breastfeeding during the DAY.
--- Now as for NIGHT weaning I have kind of worried I will not be able to do it.
Here goes:
Quick background: LO feeds to sleep
LO feeds 4-5 times between 10pm to 8am
Day 9: March 10, 2010
- LO fell asleep through carrying at 10pm.
- Woke up to feed at 11pm
- Woke up to feed at 2:50 am but I did NOT feed him this time and just carried him to sleep/
- He fell asleep but would wake up everytime I put him down! So I had to rock him to sleep until 4am until he woke up and would not stop crying until I fed him... So I did.
- Next feed was at 7am.
- So total feeds for this night was: 11pm, 4am and 7am: for a start I think I am okay with that.
I want to do this gradually as I know that LO is so used to feeding every night on demand ever
since he was born.
note: from this experience, I am hoping I will be able to stick to not feeding LO between 11pm to 4am. . . Wish me luck!:)
Day 10: March 11, 2010
- I breastfed LO again at 11pm... Unfortunately, he woke up at 1am and wanted to feed, I tried to just rock him to sleep but I GAVE IN. :( I was sooo tired and felt sorry for LO that I gave up and fed him instead.
-So now I will put the night weaning on hold just for this week, just to relax him a bit. And I will try to start again next week.
